Error Troubleshooting

The moment we think the ink cartridges are not functional, we simultaneously think about servicing the printer. That is not true all the time.

Carriage latch

  • You must check the latch of the carriage and see that it is down
  • For this, reach into the cartridge access door and verify cartridge placements
  • If the latch seems up, then press down till you hear a snapping sound
  • Once you close the access door, the issue seems resolved as the printer calibrates

Cartridge Contacts

  • If the issue is resolved, you won’t see an error message anymore
  • But if you still see the error then you may want to clean the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 ink cartridge contacts
  • This is because, if there is any debris present on the contacts then electricity will not pass through

Note: You must also ensure that you clean the cartridges one by one and do not keep them outside the printer for 10+ minutes. When an ink cartridge is taken out of its slot, put the printer off; if not the ink cartridge system can be damaged. The cloth should be soft without any fibers sticking out of it. Otherwise, minute fibers may lodge themselves on the contacts and damage them.

Cleaning The Contacts

  • Once you open the carriage door, the ink system calibrates itself and you will see that the cartridges have moved to the center of the path for easy visualization and removal
  • Release the cartridges from their slot; push to the front and then pull towards you
  • Now, use the cloth that you kept aside to clean the cartridges
  • After cleaning them, insert them back again; double-check whether you are placing them in the correct order and close the carriage access
  • Next, check if the control panel is displaying any error messages

Printer Device Resetting

  • Finally, if none of the above fixes work, you just have to reset the printer
  • This, generally, clears all the error messages and any connection issues are rebuilt with the action
  • Turn on the printer and wait till it gets silent
  • At the next immediate action reach out to the back of the printer and disconnect the power cord
  • Wait for a minute and only then turn it on after plugging all the powers back

Replace the Cartridges

  • If cleaning the contacts, resetting the printer and reseating the cartridges did not help then it is time to check if a specific ink cartridge is faulty
  • For this, you may want to first check the warranty information for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 ink cartridge supplies
  • If it is under warranty, then you can check for a replacement with the manufacturer itself
  • Information for this is available on HP’s website

New Cartridge Placement

  • Reach into the carriage door and release the cartridges from their slot
  • Take out the new ink cartridges from their packaging
  • Place them one by one into the cartridge slot
  • Slide them in properly on their paths and once you have pushed it right through you should hear a snap
